Denver Stars: Noah Van Sciver

Ethan Van Sciver is a well known name in comics these days. He has done illustrations on such titles as Green Lantern: Rebirth and New X-Men. However, it is his younger brother and fellow comic artist, Noah Van Sciver, who we will focus on today.

Noah is not only a comic artist, but a writer, publisher, and resident of the fine city of Denver. He does mostly underground work and self publishes comic books, but he has become well known for Four Questions, a comic you can find in the weekly Denver newspaper, Westword. He has also been published in national journals and will be contributing to an upcoming issue of The Comics Journal.

You can tell at first glance that his work is dramatically different than his older brother’s, but every bit as enjoyable. While Ethan draws very realistic characters, Noah’s work is reminiscent of Robert Crumb. The content of Noah’s comics is far removed from what his brother works on. Noah doesn’t deal with superheroes lifting trucks or anything like that, but rather focuses on historical figures and absurd events. This is not a huge or well known market, but Noah has made a name for himself despite the looming shadow of his older brother and has been invited to numerous conventions. He is only becoming better known as time goes on, and is truly one of Denver’s best comic talents. Check out Noah Van Sciver’s site here for updates on his work and to buy his comic Blammo.
