Wonder Woman: The Circle/Terry Dodson
Wonder Woman, one-time feminist icon and the third corner of DC Comics’ fabled “trinity,” has often gotten the fuzzy end of the lollipop when compared to Superman or Batman. Both of them have had multiple comic book series going at the same time, as well as movies, TV shows, videogames and novels. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, has had a TV show in the 70s and a recent direct-to-DVD movie release, and that’s it. Almost every other appearance has been within the context of the Justice League or the Super Friends.
But thanks to Gail Simone and the folks at Comic Book Resources, Wonder Woman is getting a little more respect and attention from super-hero comic book fans and professionals.
On September 5, Comic Book Resources opened a forum specifically for fans of Wonder Woman to gather, much in the same way they had for Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and the X-Men. And gather they did. In less than two weeks of existence, the forum generated over 6,000 posts and almost 100,000 pageviews.
And many of them had never read a comic book. Today, Comic Book Resources published a new column from Simone, current writer of Wonder Woman, explaining:
Those people may not all read comics, but they are every bit as much a fan as we are. I think it’s time we all admit that the secret stuff that we loved, the stuff we thought only we knew about, has caught on with the outside world and will continue to do so. There’s got to be room for boisterous manicurists in fandom, and that means we might have to learn to share our toys a little…
The idea was never to focus on me or the current run of the comic, but rather to embrace the entire idea of Wonder Woman, as I talked about at the beginning of this column. I wanted fans of the animated shows, the toys, the cosplaying, the novels, the television series and all the various runs of the comic itself, both beloved and not-so-beloved, to be welcome, and it seems to be working beautifully.
The column, “Wonder of Wonders,” featuring a rotating team of writers exploring all facets of Wonder Woman in all forms of media, and how she inspires us all. It will begin in earnest, will start next week.
If you’re a Wonder Woman fan, in any genre, you owe it to yourself to check out the Wonder Woman forum over at Comic Book Resources.
And if you’re not a Wonder Woman fan, why the hell not?
Which night of TV seems designed especially for women this fall?
