While G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra is shooting up the box office competition; IDW Publishing is putting the Real American Hero on your iPhone and iPod Touch.
IDW took over the licensing of the venerable G.I. Joe comic book franchise last year and made some drastic changes, the foremost being an entire reboot of the G.I. Joe history. Throwing out the over 20 years of history dating back to G.I. Joe’s Marvel Comic’s debut and continuing through Image and Devil’s Due production run, IDW came out of the gate running with three new Joe titles: G.I. Joe and two background titles, G.I. Joe: Origins and G.I. Joe Cobra.
G.I. Joe Origins tells the tales of the first missions and formation of the elite fighting force, while G.I. Joe: Cobra follows undercover Joe agent, Chuckles, as he infiltrates a mysterious organization of terrorists and criminals.
IDW has released both titles as iPhone/iPod Touch apps. The digital issues provide a scrolling view of the original comics. Despite the small screen, the images are striking and easy to read. While you might not want to read all your comics this way, the comic apps are a great way to pass the time while waiting in line at the movie theater.
In addition to the re-prints of their regular titles, IDW has also released the G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra movie adaptation and the comic adaptation for the official movie prequel.
Individual issue apps cost $0.99 and graphics novels are $3.99-$4.99
