Dragon’s Lair has been providing great customer service, thousands of comics and zounds of gaming titles since 1986. In 2004 Dragon’s Lair moved to its current location allowing it to expand on the wealth of merchandise it offers to costumers. With the affectionate store cats and games tables open to anyone at anytime, Dragon’s Lair creates a family friendly environment for fans of comics, role-playing games (RPGs), manga, anime and so much more.
Whether you’re looking for a board game like none you’ve ever seen before, recent comic releases, trade paper backs, table-top RPGs or miniature war games Dragon’s Lair is easily your one-stop shopping for all things fandom. Whether its traditional table-top RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons and The World of Darkness or more obscure indy RPGs like Poisn’d and Unknown Armies they either have it on hand or can easily order it for you.
What really stands out, however, is their vast array of collectable card games (CCGs), miniature war games and board games. If you’re interested in CCGs like Magic: the Gathering, Pokémon or World of Warcraft not only do they have them available but they also provide a space for you to play anytime of day. But that isn’t as impressive as their collection of war gaming tables with an array of debris and terrain usable for free. So if you love any Games Workshop games, Heroclix, Warmachines or Monsterpocalypse this is a great place to play and meet like-minded fans. If those games sound too expensive for you, peruse the section of board games that will make you realize Monopoly is merely child’s play. With classics like Axis and Allies and Settlers of Catan or more modern titles like Arkham Horror and Android, you’ll be sure to find something that will peak your interest.
Aside from immense variety of gaming merchandise, Dragon’s Lair also rents out DVDs of anime, BBC shows, American TV, Sci Fi, Fantasy and beyond. These titles are always up to date and there is always staff on hand to help you find your old favorites or discover something new. So, for example, if you enjoy the new Doctor Who series and want to catch up on storylines (even from the classic shows) they eager to help you find it.
Now with all this other cool stuff available you’d expect them to have a lackluster comics section, but you would be wrong. It is just as comprehensive as their other merchandise, including a section advertising local and independent titles. Many of the staff members also put together kiosks with pertinent comic information and less known work from popular writers and artists. The only downfall to their comics section is that their collection of single issue comics only goes back about six months. Which means if you’re looking for back issues you’ll probably want to go else where (such as Austin Books and Comics or Capstone Comics). Once the issues go beyond six months, however, they are normally donated to local high schools, libraries, shelters or community centers as a way of truly being a part of the Austin community.
If any of these things intrigue you, but you’re not quite sure what they are, then fear not. The staff has a general understanding of almost everything in their store and more then happy to discuss their personal hobbies and favorite games, comic titles or shows.
All these things make it a great shop, but what is more impressive is the community that has grown up through this store. Any time of day or night you can find a regular there who’s more then happy to play a round of magic, discuss miniature painting tips, help you find a trade paperback of their favorite story or just talk shop. Dragon’s Lair is always scheduling events to bring in new costumers and connect regulars to one another. From book signings and release parties to game tournaments and demos, their events schedule is always full of excitement. And if you can’t make it to any events, you can always just come in, sit down and play.

This place truly is a "One-Stop Shop" for any gamer or anime fan. The staff has a well developed product knowledge and the shelves contain a variety of product types and titles that is unequalled anywhere else I've seen. Open late so you can rush in to grab that sourcebook you need or the "lucky pack" of CCG cards and not have to wait 'till morning. Definitely worth a look.
