The victor and two acolytes.
“This is the best idea ever” is just one of the raves overheard at Omnivore Book’s pie baking contest, which turned into a virtual extravaganza, with 48 entrees and more than 80 attendees. Everyone from professional bakers to SFPD's own Officer Miller showed up, and there was an incredible diversity of techniques used to make each pie special.
And it wasn't just the fruit pies that were special. While Hannah Banana's Cream Pie reigned supreme, there were several pumpkin pies, multiple berry pies, and Lyndsey's almond torte with raspberry filling that were simply delightful.
Among other favorites officer Miller's nectarine pie, made with marscapone almost like a cheesecake, and Patricia Klines' ipies, individual pastries with delightfully flaky crusts. Spinach Dosas and a pie titled "Autumn Delight," with a light pumpkin flavor and a buttery crust, were wonderful savory contrasts to all the sweet goodness exhibited. Not to be outdone was the ricotta tart with toasted pine nuts.
An incredibly unique and brilliant combination was entree number 30, strawberry basil and fig was wonderfully executed and might have been the author's favorite, though the wild berry pie and "I fall to pieces cuz my baby's got the blues" berry pie were also hits.
As were most pies. It was hard to keep track of all the heavenly dishes, and all the great foodie conversation discussing techniques and favorites, one would be hard pressed not to enjoy the event. It is always a pleasure to discuss the virtues of duck fat and lard, reminisce about previous events and challenges, and to meet such people as Allen Cohn of the non-profit Baker's Dozen, which will be hosting an event at Cordon Bleu next month.
Most pies got at least a few votes, but Hannah's banana cream pie was an overwhelming favorite, and Ms.Berman promised to share her recipe with the Omnivore staff, so be sure to keep an eye out for it and other upcoming events, such as the frequent guest speakers.

Hi Dustin, Unfortunately I won't be available that night for the event. Sounds like fun though.
