Decked out in a slightly-sequined gray tracksuit and Yankees cap, only one man could successfully convince a Boston crowd that his choice of dress was merely due to simple color coordination – Eddie Griffin.
Playing to an almost sold-out crowd at Boston’s Comedy Connection at Wilbur Theater, Griffin certainly came to entertain, bringing his well-known flamboyant and cinematic style with him. The Undercover Brother star wooed his audience with tales of midget sex and parenting advice, despite interference from an overly-drunk audience member (who, upon removal from the venue, sparked a theater-wide farewell chant led by Griffin himself).
Opening for Griffin was Boston’s own Bigg Nez, who relished the opportunity to perform alongside such a comedy legend. Considered to be one of the most underrated comedians around, Bigg Nez has been blazing through Boston’s scene with his own unique style of comedy for over five years. Born in Pennsylvania, Nez discovered he always had the ability to make people laugh at a very young age when he realized that he didn’t like to see people feeling sad. His comedy career began when he entered a Boston comedy club and felt that he could do better than the talent presented, if given a chance. After speaking to the promoter, he got that chance.
So it’s no wonder that the Comedy Connection reached out to Nez for their opening act. Being the only comic to open for such a large talent is bound to be intimidating, but Bigg Nez more than rose to the occasion, leaving the audience in stitches and undoubtedly wanting more.
“The experience was awesome,” reflects Bigg Nez on performing with Griffin. “Eddie Griffin is an original gangster...it was an honor to open for a man I grew up watching. It was special to be the ONLY opener - it didn’t add pressure, but it did make the experience truly special. It is a blessing.”
