Many people find their way to taking an improv comedy/acting class because they enjoy Whose Line Is it Anyway?, or they want to gain confidence and/or it just looks so darn fun. The Bay Area has no shortage of theater companies and acting schools that offer improv classes, but one unique improv theater in Oakland, Pan Theater, has created an experience that goes beyond offering a terminal four-to-six week class. Their Troupe Training program is intended to provide beginning improvisers the opportunity to be a part of a working improv ensemble. The Troupe is not just a class; the aim is to bring a team together that will not only learn the skills and technique of short form improv (also known as "theater sports"), but to learn how to work together as an ensemble with the shared goal of performing for an audience.

An audition is required to join the Troupe Training Program; However, neophyte improvisers should not be discouraged. The Troupe directors are not looking for a polished improviser, but someone who can "accept offers" and "play well with others": two of the basic "commandments" improv acting. After 8-10 weeks of rehearsals, the troupe will perform on the Pan Theater stage for friends, family, and the public.

Pan Theater also encourages performance and participation beyond rehearsals. On the first Friday of every month, Pan Theater holds Improv Jams, where all current and past troupe members come together to create long-form scenes together. Additionally, all current Training Troupe ensemble members can see any of Pan Theater's shows for free.  Auditions for the Troupe Training program are held every few months and are announced through Pan Theater's website and newsletter.
