'The Hangover 2' slated to compete against 'Mission: Impossible 4' next summer (with video)

"The Hangover" is getting a sequel, and it's going up against Tom Cruise in "M:I4"

Hey, remember when Tom Cruise had his own successful franchise?  I know, it's been awhile, but it's true: Cruise used to headline the wildly successful (though not always critically-pleasing) "Mission: Impossible" movies.  Now, there's a fourth impossible "Mission" on the way, and it's going head-to-head at the box office with one of the most anticipated comedies of the year, "The Hangover 2".  Read all the details below, my gentle Examiner readers...

JJ Abrams and Tom Cruise have been talking up a fourth "Mission: Impossible" for years, but if you'd asked anyone yesterday, they woulda told you that another sequel was probably far in the future, what with Abrams' commitments to another "Star Trek" and about 80 different TV shows.  Turns out, not so much.  Here's what they're saying over at HitFix, the awesome entertainment site:

The studio confirmed today that Cruise will star and co-produce the fourth installment of the big-screen franchise along with "Mission: Impossible III" director J.J. Abrams.  The film will be released Memorial Day weekend, 2011.  That currently puts it up another against the highly anticipated sequel, "The Hangover 2."  In theory, the fourth "PIrates of the Caribbean" movie will open the weekend before and "Kung Fu Panda 2," another Paramount distributed film, is set for the week after.  Look for "Panda" to move later in June.

HitFix also points out an interesting aspect of this whole thing: Just a few years ago, Viacom's Chairman Sumner Redstone was swearing up and down that Paramount Pictures (part of Viacom, obviously) would never work with Cruise again following a series of bizarre public appearances on Cruise's part.  Now, here we are.  Guess they made up? Personally, I've been enjoying Cruise's comedic work lately.  Perhaps he could combine the genres?  It's happened before:

So, Abrams' "M:I4" should be lensing pretty soon.  As for "The Hangover 2", the script is still being worked on by director Todd Phillips as he finishes up filming on "Due Date", the Zach Galifianakis/Robert Downey Jr. road trip comedy that's been shooting for the past month or two.  There's been no news on plot details, who may or may not be returning (the four leads are sure to return, but co-stars Ken Jeong and Heather Graham may not make it), or anything interesting, but stay tuned as more becomes available.

Speaking of Galifianakis, though: dude's hosting "Saturday Night Live" in a week or two, so if you're a fan of his, be sure to set your DVR's.  His episode airs March 6.  For those that haven't been exposed to Galifianakis any farther than his performance in "The Hangover", check out some of his standup below:
