Elvira, Mistress of The Pun-Based Humor Involving Corpses and Spooky Stuff, returns to TV this Fall

Elvira, Mistress of The Dark, is coming back to TV in September.

There's a good chance, if you're one of the younger Comedy Examiner readers out there, that you have no idea who Elvira is.  Chances are, though, you've at least seen pictures of the goth-looking, wise-cracking horror-comedy icon at some point over the years: she's the one that looks like Morticia Addams, the one with the bottomless cleavage and cheesy punchlines.  Well, if that's not ringing a bell, you'll get a chance to relive the magic very soon: Elvira-- Mistress of The Dark-- is returning to TV this September.  This is either very exciting news or incredibly boring news-- there's no wiggle room here.  In any case, read on for the details, my gentle Examiner readers...

Elvira-- who's known in some nefarious circles as Cassandra Peterson-- has been out of the public eye for many, many years.  Following the peak of her popularity (that'd be the mid to late 80's), the horror-comedy icon has been largely absent from TV and the movies, sticking to appearances at conventions and other geek-filled gatherings.  At one point, she even had her own movie (it's spectacularly bad, but good after a beer or seventeen), but those days are long since passed. That's all about to change, though, as Elvira is returning to television this September.  Here's what we know about the show at this point:

All I can say is, IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME!" Elvira said.

"Elvira will be every bit as relevant as the first day she burst onto the scene; a beautiful opinionated woman who always delivers just what her audience expects from her," says Hank Cohen, CEO/Partner, Trifecta Entertainment.  "At Trifecta, we take pride in bringing proven and trusted brands to the syndicated marketplace; Elvira is a time-tested and wildly successful brand unto herself and her new show perfectly exemplifies our strategy."

The show is titled Elvira's Movie Macabre though a company called THIS! Television, a network that I've never heard of.  The fact that it's syndicated, though, means that it could pop up literally anywhere.  Yes, literally: Elvira's Movie Macabre could very well begin running new episodes in your laundry room this September.  Although, all things considered, it's much more likely that it'd be a latenight offering on Comedy Central or that horror-channel I keep meaning to try out.  By the way, for being 60, Elvira's not looking too shabby, is she?  Rawr.

For those unfamiliar with Elvira and the formatting of her show(s), here's the setup: Elvira's a throwback to those old-timey shows you may have heard about wherein a "host" would run horror movies (it was generally horror, but sometimes exploitation flicks) and make cheesy wisecracks just before and after each commercial break.  Joe Bob Briggs did this for years (and, to many, was the best at it), but no one did it with as much cleavage-- or wacky corpse-related puns-- as Elvira.  Her new show is very likely to be more of the same, with Elvira introducing some cheesy horror movie, making fun of it, and then popping up every now and again to give it what-for.  Frankly, I can't imagine there's a big market for this sorta programming these days, but maybe they'll come up with a way to make it a little more modern.  Maybe Elvira will Tweet her puns during the show and they'll pop up onscreen, Pop-Up Video style.

Stay tuned for more coverage on all this as it becomes available, my precious snowflakes.  We're sure to have more updates on this one as it gets closer to September, so be sure to subscribe so you don't miss the next one.  You can hit that "Subscribe" button up top next to my ugly mug to get all future Comedy Examiner articles delivered straight to your inbox, free of charge, the moment they arrive.  Why, just look at all the fun you've been missing:

AMAZING PHOTO: "THE AVENGERS" ASSEMBLE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON THE 2010 COMIC-CON STAGE, AND IT'S AWESOME-- in which Marvel Studios gets everyone in The Avengers onstage at the same time for the first time.  Even if you're not a comic book geek, it's a pretty cool sight.  Check it out here.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: WELL, IT'S OFFICIAL-- "INCEPTION" HAS DOMINATED AT THE BOX OFFICE FOR TWO STRAIGHT WEEKS-- in which the inevitable occurs and Chris Nolan's latest keeps Angelina Jolie's latest in second place.  In other news, The Sorcerer's Apprentice looks ready to join Jonah Hex in the "Hell, No, I Won't Be Seeing That Movie" club.

LINDSAY LOHAN HAS A "HYSTERICAL FIT" AFTER INMATES CHANT "FIRE CROTCH" AT HER IN JAIL-- in which Lindsay Lohan doesn't seem to be making any friends while behind bars.  Also in which Lohan's notorious nickname rears its ugly head for the first time in years (OK, probably not years, but you get the idea).

BREAKING NEWS: IS DWIGHT SCHRUTE GOING TO BATTLE THE BATMAN IN "THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS"?  THAT'S THE RUMOR-- in which we examiner the rumor that Rainn Wilson, best known as Dwight on NBC's The Office, will be playing The Riddler in the next Batman movie.  Oh, and we also supposedly know who else is in the film, what it's called, and who the other villain is.  Take it with all the salt you can find, people.

I only have one question. Is this show going to star Cassandra Peterson or April Wahlin?
April won the show Cassandra hosted searching for a 'new' Elvira.)
