I mean that in the best way possible. No, really!
This past Thursday night, the Denver Improv hosted their Future Legends of Comedy night, a showcase of up-and-coming talent in the Denver area, and the Denver Comedy Examiner was lucky enough to receive an invite from local comedian Kyle Bufkin.
Elliot Woolsey hosted the night in an almost-flawless fashion, doing some hilarious on-his-toes improvising and getting in quick punchlines that deftly closed the seams between the many acts that found their way on-stage.
A most-fabulous aspect of the Future Legends show this past Thursday was that women were prominently featured throughout the night and these women were by far some of the best acts in the show. Katie Carpenter, a Denver transplant by way of Omaha, got in a few great bits of comedy. Jen Scully's smart act was consistently funny, and I think she should capitalize on her idea of Obama Pajamas. I'd be seriously in. Pam Van Nostern was the final lady of the evening, and her genuine and quirky set seriously connected. Van Nostern not only participates in the Future Legends show, she actually runs the thing! I caught up with her post-show and it was awesome to hear about her passion for creating a more egalitarian stage, and she even invited me to give it a whirl. Hmm. Looks like my personal adventure is on a continuum.
But of course it wasn't just the ladies who ruled the night. Jake Sharon proved that he truly may be a Future Legend of Comedy with his beyond hilarious set. You guys might know him as the Jesus of Denver. His Christ-like looks and stoner 'tude create a fusion of awesomeness that simply cant be duplicated. And I owe Kyle Bufkin an apology for making fun of his wolverine tattoo in my recent review of the Squire Lounge, because Jake's Good Poop tattoo is infinitely more weird. And fitting. Speaking of Bufkin, his strange take on the word 'box' was extensive and very funny.
Additionally, Rick Bryan had a stellar energy that radiated throughout his set. And headliner Rob Gleeson's astute observations-turned-bits brought the night together in a manner that seemed effortless. The kid definitely knows his way around a stage, and seemingly around the ways of older women. His 'cougar' bit was one of my faves, as he explained that a broke cougar was actually a coyote, who he wanted trapped and removed from the neighborhood.
All in all, a very funny night with some great up-and-coming comics. Mark your calendar for the next Future Legends of Comedy night, which will be on Sunday, January 31st starting at 7:30pm.
Happy laughing, Denver!
