Orny Adams
One of America’s most acclaimed, and some would say underrated, stand-up comics makes a rare Midwest appearance this weekend at The Funny Bone on the Levee in Newport. Along with Jerry Seinfeld, Orny Adams was the subject of the 2002 documentary Comedian. The film brought him national exposure however these days the Boston native performs mostly on the coasts. A self-described Massachusetts liberal, he once told Jay Leno, on The Tonight Show, that he was for gay stem cell research. “I don’t even know what that means, but you put those two things together and you upset a lot of people.” He’s no America-basher though. A few years back he defended this land on the Australian comedy program Glass House. Adams was asked if a poll, conducted down under, showing Aussies distaste for Americans had any merit. “You might have a case,” he told viewers, “but here’s the deal. We don’t give a crap what you think about us. It’s not like we’re doing polls about how we feel about Australia. We don’t care, you don’t have oil.” He later added; “you’re like the little brother we can’t get rid of. We’re gong to Afghanistan, and you’re like ‘can we come too? Can we come too?’”
