On the night before Thanksgiving the streets of Los Angeles are unusually subdued, and the sound of marquees and holiday lights clicking on and off can be heard rather than merely seen by the few who venture out. The holiday thins the usual party crowds in the entertainment districts, but not the local talent. The Ice House Comedy Club in Pasadena had an exceptionally impressive lineup of performers Wednesday night, but none garnered more laughs than Los Angeles comic and radio talk show host Matt Walker. Matt instantly seemed at ease onstage with a mellow and relaxed demeanor, but with an undercurrent of mischief – like the little brother who smiles sweetly at you as you sit on the tack that he has planted in your chair. Matt’s humor is more playful than sadistic, though, and the Ice House crowd instantly responded to his personal stories and witty observations.
The 35-year-old redhead shared his experiences growing up in Pico Rivera where the majority of the population is Latino and where, as he reported, “every day is Kick-a-Ginger Day.” He also touched upon such timely topics as how to tell which guy at a bar-b-que has been to prison; what it’s like to grow up with a father who is 51 years older than you; the threat of the repossession of his hearing for the nonpayment of ear surgery bills; and the optimum weight for one who wishes to partake in a mosh pit.
Matt Walker’s delivery and persona are similar to that of comedian Dave Attell, but Matt’s style is more nuanced and less aggressive, and he has a distinct perspective that sets him apart and puts him in a class all his own. He’s a man’s man, but one who also possesses the skill to win the hearts and laughs of the ladies. In addition to his comedic talents, Matt hosts the Small Business Hour at SmallBusinessHour.com. Just back from the Ice House Saturday night, where Tim O'Rourke, one of the greatest LA stand-ups for many years, rocked again. If you're just starting to do reviews in LA, just jump to the top of the heap and catch Tim in his headliner act in LA or Vegas or on TV sometime.
Beg to differ with Marie, but Matt was definitely the top banana of a very good bunch Sat eve! Great Night, great time.
Way to go Man! Great performance You Rock.I liked the reviewers'
take
Perhaps Garrett needs to check weekend notes, but Matt didn't perform Sat. with the top performers in stand-up. His show was earlier in the week, as the author states.
