Rep. Kathleen Curry, a veteran legislator who is the speaker pro tempore of the state House of Representatives, and the second-ranking leader in the chamber, announced today that she is leaving the Democratic party.
But she's not becoming a Republican.
According to a report in the Denver Post, Curry is changing her voter registration to unaffiliated.
The Post article quotes Curry saying that she expects to continue voting with the Democrats on most issues.
Curry, who represents Gunnison, Eagle, Garfield, Hinsdale and Pitkin counties, was elected in 2004 and is also the chair of the House Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources Committee. Her district has more registered independents than it does registered Democrats or registered Republicans.
She will be replaced both as speaker pro tempore and as a committee chair before the General Assembly begins its 2010 session on Jan. 13.
