Kids enjoy National Outdoors Day Photo by Stuart Alden
Have your kids ever gone mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking or wildlife tracking? These are all activities they can enjoy up in the mountains framing Denver, so take them to the second annual National Get Outdoors Day, June 13, at City Park. Here, they'll have a chance to try a climbing wall, go canoeing, take a 5K walk, or go fishing. If you want to prepare them for a camping trip in the mountains, take them to the "How-To" camping demonstration and the Junior Ranger Camp. Together, you can get tips for outdoor cooking, so they can help you prepare meals while camping. They can even try skiing in the summer heat!
Studies show that during the past 20 years, the time kids spend outside has fallen by 50 percent, and the time they spend plugged into electronic media daily has jumped to more than six hours. To combat this, a coalition of public land management agencies, outdoor recreation and education groups have united to bring a taste of outdoor adventures to the city.
The National Get Outdoors Day event in Denver runs from 9am to 3:30pm Saturday, June 13. The event is free.
