The Colorado Rapids trade for the rights to Gregory Richardson

This morning, Ives Galarcep reported that the Rapids traded a 2010 draft pick to Toronto FC for the rights to Gregory Richardson.  The trade has yet to be confirmed by Toronto FC or by the Colorado Rapids.

Richardson is a speedy 26 year old forward.  His resume includes playing for the Guyanese national team, and most recently for the Joe Public Football Club of Trinidad and Tobago.  He caught the attention of Major League Soccer sides by scoring a hat-trick against the New England Revolution in a CONCACAF Champion’s League game last September.

The trade comes as a surprise as all signs indicated that Toronto intended to sign Richardson.  In an interview with Staebrok News Richardson sounded optimistic and excited about signing with Toronto FC.

The Rapids are thin at the forward position.  Omar Cummings and Conor Casey are projected to be the starting tandem.  Jacob Peterson is the lone backup on the books.  Should Richardson be signed he will provide welcome depth to the forward contingent.

Can Rapids fans expect more than just depth out of this trade?  It’s the pre-season so every player has a chance.  Richardson’s hat-trick last year against New England speaks well for him.  His five starts and one goal for Joe Public suggest that he won’t be the final piece to the Rapids puzzle.

Hopefully he'll work out better than a few others have in recent years
