Depression of wages

According to the final report of the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform, immigration, particularly illegal immigration, has adverse consequences, such as helping to depress wages for low-skilled workers and creating net fiscal costs for state and local governments. More and more, immigrants are filling jobs once held by American workers.

At the same time, American workers' wages have plummeted.

Iowa Beef Processors (IBP) in Storm Lake, Iowa, now pays its employees $7 per hour; a significant decrease compared to the $19 per hour it paid its workers in 1980. Stephen Curry, author of Issues in Immigration, adds "Statistics show that 40% of wage loss among Americans is due to immigration of low-skilled workers."

This reduction of wages for American workers has generated significant debate among those who claim that illegal immigrants only take jobs that Americans refuse to do.

    This is an expert?

Making a statement without the "how" and how the "how" was reached is very amateurish. How are wages depressed? Do employers have more to do with it?

Wow, quote one person and voila, your article is complete?

    Is "amateurish" a word?

But seriously, this is just ONE example... I would be curious, as you are obviously, to see a multitude of example, but I'm willing to guess on the low side and go with approximately 11 - 12 million examples.

FACT: In the last 22 years, over 26 million illegals, have been apprehended, after crossing the border, into our United States.

THE PROBLEM IS: Less than 1, out of 4 illegals, are estimated to have been apprehended, meaning that 3, out of 4, illegals successfully entered our United States.

According to the U.S. Immigration Service another 6 million illegals in our country are visa overstays.

It is a no-brainer that illegal aliens have driven wages down. Some American and foreign employers in the U.S. are greedy, corrupt and even criminal. They look for slave labor to under cut competitors and line their pockets with obscene profits at the expense of American workers. Make E-Verify mandated for every business. Jail employers that knowingly hire illegal aliens and deport the illegals that refuse to go voluntarily.

I must say again on this Christmas morning, that ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION has caused more problems that anyone could have ever imagined. More problems that one can get into here, but we all know what they are.

I can't say the ILLEGAL ALIENS are completely to blame for the shape of our economy, but they are a BIG part of the problem. The ILLEGAL ALIENS send BILLIONS upon BILLIONS out of this Country every year, money we will NEVER see again. Does this help our economy?

How about the BILLIONS the American taxpayers fork out for the ANCHOR BABIES, the schooling of them, the medical care and the list goes on, and on, and on.

How about the MILLIONS upon MILLIONS paid to jail ILLEGAL ALIENS for the crimes, then the cost to deport them. Does this help our economy?

I believe it is time for all 50 States to pass a State law, like Arizona, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina and a few others. It is time for these ILLEGAL ALIENS to go back to their home Country and get out of this Country. The problems they are causing will not go away until the ILLEGAL ALIENS are out of this Country. I think that is plain to see.

NO ILLEGAL ALIEN HAS A RIGHT TO BE IN THIS COUNTRY FOR ANY REASON!

Merry Christmas to the LEGAL residents!

Utter nonsense! When the Ellis Island immigrant waves arrived, they also drove down wages for those that were here already. Legal or not, all first waves of poor immigrants from impoverished nations will work for cheaper than native-borns. Somehow the Ellis Island immigrants didn't destroy our nation despite the fact that most lied, stole and cheated to get in, didn't know a word of English, were penniless, and were dumb as rocks. In fact, the state of the European nations they left at that time made the Mexico of today look like a first-world nation by comparison.

Saying immigration is bad, in a nation that was literally shaped by immigration, is absurd beyond belief. What's missing from Ms. D'Ottavio's analysis is a set of longitudinal studies that show how immigrants fare over three or more generations. If she had, she would see that in the long haul, immigration has been the key to America's success and has fueled all our economic growth cycles. Initial wage depression is an unfortunate byproduct, but it is an economic necessity for continuing growth. We want free markets; well, I have news for you: that means foreign labor forces competing for the same jobs, whether American companies are hiring here or abroad. Now, most American wages are depressed by cheap labor abroad. American job loss is due more to manufacturing relocating to any nation that has cheap labor.

Stop scapegoating the poorest and most helpless portion of our population. Vent your anger and frustration in the right direction: it's the native-born citizens who are raping and pillaging our national treasure as I write this. It's those filthy rich aristocrats and nobles who show up for welfare checks, courtesy of you and I, in learjets and limos. They are shameless and guilty as all hell. Direct your anger to them, not the poor brown people who only come to survive and do work most Americans won't do. I'll eat my hat when I see all those laid-off bankers, retail workers, tech workers, and even auto makers, migrating from farm to farm picking our fruits and veggies all day every day, rain or shine. That'll be a cold day in hell when we see that.

This statement hits the nail on the head. Both parties have sold out the working Americans. Thank Bill Clinton for NAFTA, IIAIRA of 1996, when he dumped enforced of immigration laws on the state and local level and then tied their hands by forcing them to go through the INS certification. In 1997 they started the ITIN numbers for immigrants both legal and illegal so they could still collect taxes from them regardless whether it was legal for them to work. Then Bush allowed it to continue. Then the politicians wanted to clean up the mess with amnesty. As more and more Americans lose their jobs, it will become harder to push through another amnesty bill.

"illegal immigrants only take jobs that Americans refuse to do."

No one ever believed that silly statement, not even those who make the claim.

What happens is that illegals come in and underbid the workers currently in a particular industry. You can always find a job if you will work for half what the te current workers will work for. Then more illegals come until eventually wages have dopped so low in that industry that Americans can no longer afford to take the jobs unless they wish to live like illegals do --- 25 to 30 people in one house.

And it happens over and over and over again.

Deport every illegal. That's the only action a rational people can take.

Do many businesses hire immigrants (including illegals) for labor and service jobs "because few Americans are willing to do them"? Or does business hire them for "wages few Americans are willing to accept"? An oversupply of labor lowers wages. Lower legal immigration levels and stop illegal immigration in its tracks and wage rates will increase, principally in the labor and service sectors. Perhaps even approaching livable wages which all working American citizens should receive. Under the current practice, where immigration law enforcement looks the other way, illegal immigrants are achieving a better life at the expense of citizens who are faced with a less better life.

We need "comprehensive security reform" at our borders and "comprehensive immigration enforcement in the interior or our country.

Funny how people say "They are only doing jobs that no American would" I grew up in Iowa and when I was young I worked in the fields detassling corn. At the time it was all high school and college kids working summer jobs. Now it's all illegals and they aren't even getting paid what I did over 20 years ago. As this article mentions meat packers used to supply jobs to Americans at a livable wage now they don't. Construction jobs same deal. All these jobs used to be worked by citizens. How are these observations Myopic. They are true. Are you telling me 30 years ago meat packing plants weren't profitable when they paid a living wage? Of course they were or they would all be closed. The drop from $19 to $7 doesn't even take into account inflation. This is once again big business worriing about share holders and profit. I don't believe in Unions I think their time has passed. (Look at the auto industries problems)Illegal immigration has held wages artificially low ending that will make it better for every one. Citizens and legal immigrants alike.

Delaware KKKBob has a double whammy: Same statement two sites. I don't really believe he can write, so he probably copied a nativist's article he found. PDI. BUZZM1 has BUZZY math, which according to him, only 1 out of 4 undocumented immigrants has been caught crossing the border, and there has been 26 million undocumented immigrants caught, then there must be 78 million undocumented immigrants in this country. Welcome to BUZZY math, oh, and PDI means public display of ignorance.
