On June 10, 2009, Bryant and Stratton College, in conjunction with the virtual reality website, Second Life, made history by holding the first ever graduation ceremony completely online.
Holding true to the program’s format, the Second Life graduation ceremony offered graduates the opportunity to obtain their degrees in the same fashion they earned them: online.
Complete with digital caps and gowns, the avatars of approximately 40 graduates walked in procession on the college’s virtual campus.
Philip Rosedale, Founder and Chairman of Second Life acted as commencement speaker for the June 10th, 2009 ceremony in avatar form.

...well almost. Texas State Technical College (TSTC) held graduation ceremonies in Second Life on May 6, 2009. Not just an event either...a student that completed a college degree plan (Digital Media) entirely in-world was celebrated.
Hey, Kevin! Thanks for the info. I'll have to look into that. According to the Bryant and Stratton website, this was the first ever Second Life graduation ceremony, but perhaps what they meant was that it was the first ever for their particular college. Thanks again!
