As the traditional wrestling season winds down, the thoughts of many wrestlers and their parents turn to... wrestling camps.
Wrestling camps are an excellent way for youth and high school wrestlers to learn new skills, enhance their techniques, test their abilities against wrestlers from other parts of the country, and perhaps even get noticed by coaches from top college programs who are working as clinicians at the camp they're attending.
However, selecting a wrestling camp can be tougher than stepping onto the mat with a college champ. There are hundreds of camps available. And wrestlers and parents want to get the most of out their investment in time and money.
Now there's a source for practical, independent, unbiased information to help wrestlers and parents make winning choices: The Ultimate Guide to Wrestling Camps. This new book is by Matt Krumrie, veteran wrestling journalist who's written for websites such as InterMat, TheGuillotine, and TheWrestlingMall... and, for the past few years, has penned the preview article for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships programs sold to fans attending the event. (Krumrie also writes as Minneapolis Workplace Examiner.)
Krumrie says, as a wrestling writer, he gets tons of questions about choosing a wrestling camp. He thought it made sense to put together a book to provide families with answers they're seeking. As Krumrie said in an interview with InterMat, "Parents spend so much money for their wrestlers for things like wrestling camps. Camps can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars each. When a family sends multiple kids to camp, or multiple camps over the course of a summer, it really adds up."
Before writing The Ultimate Guide to Wrestling Camps, Krumrie and the book's contributing writers talked to the experts who know the subject: High school and college coaches... all-time great college wrestlers... individuals who run wrestling camps... parents of wrestlers... and young wrestlers themselves. Over 40 individuals in all were interviewed.
The Ultimate Guide to Wrestling Camps provides practical, useful information, including basic definitions of words and phrases seen in wrestling camp brochures and websites... whether a wrestler should participate in a summer wrestling camp AND a year around wrestling club... a chapter on wrestling camps for girls and young women... and another chapter on camps and facilities that teach mixed martial arts to wrestlers. There's even a handy checklist of items to bring to camp.
