Ten years to the day that Rulon Gardner upset Russia's Alexander Karelin to win the gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum announced the planned induction ceremory to welcome Gardner into its Alan and Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions has been postponed.
The event, originally scheduled for October 9, 2010, in Minneapolis, was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances with Gardner’s schedule. It will be rescheduled for a date when Gardner can attend.
Gardner, a 2000 Olympic champion and 2001 World champion, was scheduled to be this year’s sole honoree into the Hall of Champions, located inside the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. Gardner, who also earned a bronze medal in Greco at the 2004 Athens Olympics, was welcomed as a Distinguished Member into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma this summer.
“We regret that unforeseen circumstances have kept Rulon Gardner from attending his induction into the Greco-Roman Hall of Champions,” said Alan Rice, namesake of the Hall, and long active in Greco-Roman wrestling as a competitor (placing seventh at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics) and coach of the US Greco team at the 1972 Munich Olympics. “We look forward to his induction into the Hall of Champions next year.”
