The University of Oregon eliminated its wrestling program at the end of the 2008 season. However, supporters continue to fight for the sport's reinstatement at the Eugene, Oregon school, according to an article at TheMat.com, the official website for USA Wrestling.
“Within four days (of being informed of the decision to end the wrestling program), we had the site, SaveOregonWrestling.org, up and running,” said Ron Finley, who had been head wrestling coach for the Oregon Ducks, and continues to serve as the director of Save Oregon Wrestling.
The article, written by Matthew Blumberg, states, "With the funds currently pledged and a solid plan to address the team’s budget issues, Finley cannot help but have faith that the dedicated efforts of the wrestling community over the last few years could lead to a reinstatement."
What's more, the website has a petition that has garnered over 7,400 signatures... and links to contact University of Oregon administrators, including the school's new athletic director, Mike Belotti.
With recent announcements of the establishment of new intercollegiate wrestling programs at Wayland Baptist University in Texas, Lake Erie College in Ohio, Shorter College in Georgia, and Ohio Valley University in West Virginia, fans can only hope for success in reinstating wrestling at the University of Oregon.
