Taylor Lautner, who played Jacob in the recent hit movie New Moon, is reportedly in talks to star in a remake of Vision Quest, the iconic 1985 film about a high school wrestler in search of himself.

According to reports from the New York Daily News and E! News websites, the 17-year-old Lautner would  play the lead role of Louden Swain, portrayed by Matthew Modine in the original film.

The movie Vision Quest was based on the novel of the same title by Terry Davis, originally published 30 years ago. The 24-year-old film is notable for being one of the first movie roles for Madonna, who, as a barroom singer, performed Crazy for You and Gambler. The Vision Quest cast also included Linda Fiorentino as Carla, the "older woman" who rents a room at the Swain house, and Forest Whitaker as Balldozer, one of Swain's teammates. (Whitaker went on to win the Best Actor Oscar in 2007 for The King of Scotland.)

Here are some details about a possible remake, from the E! News report:

... the still-in-development film, which counts Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill Entertainment (and Twilight and New Moon fame) as producers. We hear that Richard Munic has penned a screenplay that is "very faithful" to the original film.

"Taylor saw [the script] and is really excited about it," says a source. "It's very much in line with his athleticism. His character is someone who's striving for greatness."

Those in the amateur wrestling community may have some basic questions about the casting of a Vision Quest remake:

  • Can Taylor Lautner be believable as a high school wrestler? Quoting E! News:  "Lautner is an accomplished martial artist, who won several titles as a child."
  • Who will play the role of Brian Shute, Louden Swain's menacing, muscular mat rival?

why ruin a classic movie about wrestling for wrestlers with a "flavor of the month" actor just to bring in the female population. if anything an actor with some wrestling background is needed to fill the role, ala tom cruise (glen ridge) jay mohr (verona) or aston kutcher (iowa) i know they may be a little old but i can think of a bunch of guys who are wrestlers and actors

I def agree and see where you are coming from. A great classic. Perhaps could be very well portrayed by Taylor. The first thing on any producer's mind is the success and mastering of a movie. Casting Taylor as the lead will bring in so much more of an audience. I myself will more likely want to see it for that matter. We will then be able to see Taylor and a more broad range of his skill. I'm excited to see further into what could become of all of this.

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! first of all karate is very diffrent from wrestling, no comparison as wrestling is the higher martial arts due to all the wrestlers having success in the UFC. Next this guy looks nothing a normal day wrestler because if he did he wouldn't be making love stories let along modeling. In roder for hollywood to get this right they mst hire an actual athlete not some guy who took steroids to get all big for the movies. This is a shame as they shouldn't even be doing a remake of this movie and the fact that this douchbag has no idea what the sport of wrestling is actually about!!

No one who is a true athlete or wrestler should go see this movie if this guy decides to star in it, this is a disgrace and this will ruin anything the sport of wrestling has established. Please no remake that guy is not a wrestler.

Seriously the man is not even close to being a wrestler! Him making this movie would totally destroy the wrestling community that we've all been striving so hard to build, with this dude and his love story dramas, he'll totally puss out the wrestling community!!!

well u put yourself in the producers shoes he wants his movie be a success box office wise and wants the actor to resonate with the entire audience - i think taylor is a great choice if he can pull off this performance he can pull off anything taylor is such a dedicated kid i bet he will take wrestling lessons and everything and this role requires an athlete and taylor is great- i dont get how u assume this movie will only bring women in its about wrestling a male sport surely males will watch it too instead of saying that taylor will ruin the movie u should give him a chance

Martial arts isnt wrestling. They need to somehow find someone who was a wrestler...he may be athletic but wrestling is a different kind of test of athleticism. He may be able to take his shirt off like a champ but i wouldnt be able to see him as a wrestler. dont ruin a classic just so girls will watch. I have nothing against the guy, but a wrestler needs that part

He wont be able to properly execuse ANY real wrestling move to make it believable to a REAL wrestling audience! Please god no, dont ruin a classic! Pick a REAL wrestler at least to play the part! C'mon this is TERRIBLE! He will look like a JV kid...
