Metcalf vs Caldwell featured bout at Beat The Streets' "Battle on the Intrepid" event May 13

It ranks as one of the greatest upsets in college wrestling. Now there will be a rematch... and it's all for a good cause.

Brent Metcalf will again meet Darrion Caldwell on the mat as the featured match for the Beat The Streets' "Battle on the Intrepid" Wrestling Gala on Thursday, May 13 on the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Intrepid in New York City.

In the 149-pound finals at the 2009 NCAA Division I Championships in St Louis, North Carolina State's Darrion Caldwell defeated defending champ Brent Metcalf of Iowa, 11-6, in one of the biggest upsets in an NCAA wrestling title match. (College Wrestling Examiner ranked it as the No. 2 College Wrestling Story of 2009.) 

Wrestling fans have been clamoring for a rematch for over a year. Caldwell was unable to defend his title this March after incurring a season-ending injury while rollerblading in the summer of 2009. He had shoulder surgery, and was unable to compete the entire season. Metcalf won his second national title last month at the 2010 NCAAs, defeating Ohio State's Lance Palmer in the finals.

In addition to the Metcalf-Caldwell "main event" -- to be wrestled freestyle -- there will be other wrestling matches, featuring middle school, high school and USA Wrestling freestyle and Greco-Roman competitors.

The evening also includes a cocktail reception, dinner and awards presentation.

The event is a fundraiser for Beat The Streets, a program designed to expand and develop wrestling in the New York City Metropolitan area from the youth through the Olympic level, with the idea of building lifelong skills and values.
