The Hoosiers head wrestling coach Duane Goldman is to be inducted into the Hawkeyes' Hall of Fame.

It may be a tongue-twister, and it may seem strange for the long-time head coach of one Big Ten wrestling program to be welcomed into the hall of fame of another.

However, Indiana University wrestling coach Duane Goldman is being inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2009 for his accomplishments as a Hawkeye wrestler.

While at Iowa wrestling for coach Dan Gable, Goldman was a four-time Big Ten champion, four-time NCAA Division I All-American, and a four-time NCAA finalist every season of his four-year career with the Hawkeyes. Goldman's 132 victories places him sixth in career wins at Iowa, and tenth in overall winning percentage.

Goldman won the Big Ten conference title at 177 pounds in 1983-1984. then claimed the 190-pound crown at the 1985 and 1986 Big Tens.

Although Goldman was a four-time NCAA finalist, three of those finals appearances ended in disappointment. At the 1983 NCAA 177-pound finals, Goldman lost to Oklahoma's Mark Schultz; the following year, in the same weight class, the Hawkeye fell to Jim Scherr of the University of Nebraska. In the 190-pound finals at the 1985 NCAAs, Dan Chaid of Oklahoma handed Goldman yet another finals defeat. However, in his senior year, Duane Goldman got revenge on Chaid, beating him 5-4 in the 190 finals at the 1986 NCAAs on his home turf at Carver-Hawkeye Arena to win what had been an elusive national title.

Senior season was a banner year for Goldman in more ways than one. In addition to winning the NCAA title, he went 36-0, setting an Iowa record for winning percentage in that year.

After concluding his college career at Iowa, Duane Goldman captured a gold medal in the 1987 Pan-American championships.

As Indiana's wrestling coach for the past 18 years, Goldman has tallied 216 wins, the most in IU history. Under Goldman’s watch, 23 IU wrestlers have earned All-American status, with three winning NCAA titles.  This is Goldman's 18th year as the head coach of the Hoosier westling team.
