Joe Slaton, a 2008 NCAA All-American for the University of Iowa, was arrested Sunday morning in Iowa City.
According to the Iowa City Police online arrest blotter, Joseph Slaton, 22, was arrested at 10:43 am Sunday, October 4 at 424 Highway 1 West in Iowa City, and taken to jail. Other online reports indicate this is the address of Paul's Discount, and that the charge is shoplifting.
Slaton, a native of Cedar Rapids, came to Iowa in the fall of 2006, after originally going to Virginia Tech. When then-Hokies coach Tom Brands accepted the head coaching job at Iowa, three of his Virginia Tech wrestlers originally from Iowa -- including Slaton -- tried to follow Brands back to Iowa City. Here's how Slaton described the situation to this writer in a January 2007 profile for InterMat:
After months of legal proceedings, in the end, it was decided that Joe Slaton and the other Hokies from Iowa could transfer out … but they had to sit out from official competition for the entire next season, per NCAA transfer rules. The Cedar Rapids native says, "It hurt us as wrestlers, but Virginia Tech didn't really gain anything, either."
"I basically got another redshirt year out of it. Stayed in shape, got stronger."
During that first season at Iowa (2006-2007), Slaton posted an 18-4 record at 133 and 141 pounds while wrestling unattached, winning titles at Cleveland State, Harold Nichols and Glen Brand Opens.
In 2007-2008, Slaton earned All-American honors, placing second at 133 pounds at NCAA Championships after being pinned in 45 seconds in the 133 finals by Oklahoma State's Coleman Scott, one of the fastest falls in a finals in nearly 80 years of NCAA tournaments. Slaton placed third at Big Ten Championships, and compiled a 31-5 in collegiate matches.
Last season, Slaton and Daniel Dennis battled for the starting spot at 133 the beginning of the season; Slaton was put in at the beginning of the season for the Iowa State dual, but, after being dominated by the Cyclones' Nick Fanthorpe, saw very limited action.
In high school at Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Slaton compiled a 165-11 overall record with 75 pins. He was a four-time Iowa high school state finalist, winning the title in his junior and senior years.
