A former college coach takes the helm of a high school program... while a former Hofsra University wrestler becomes a graduate assistant at another college.

Sunderland goes to high school.  Former Penn State head wrestling coach Troy Sunderland has been hired by the Manheim Central school as its head wrestling coach,  during a school board meeting Tuesday night.

Sunderland, who resigned from Penn State on April 4, replaces Shane Mack, who had coached the Barons since 2005.  Former Iowa State coach Cael Sanderson took the helm at Penn State April 19.

The coaching job will be Sunderland’s first at the high school level. Sunderland served as an assistant at Penn State and Navy before replacing John Fritz as the Nittany Lions’ head coach in 1999.

During his final season at Penn State, Sunderland, 38, led the Nittany Lions to an 8-12-2 record and 17th-place finish at the 2009 NCAA championships. In 11 years at Penn State, Sunderland went 115-90-2 and coached 27 All-Americans

Sunderland becomes the 15th head coach in Manheim Central history, which has had a wrestling program since 1926. The Barons has produced eight state champions and 13 PIAA runner-ups since 1943. The school also conducts one of the state’s top high school tournaments — the Manheim Holiday Tournament.

Manarte to Stevens. Former Hofstra wrestler John Manarte has been hired as the graduate assistant at Stevens Institute of Technology.

Manarte, an NCAA Division I qualifier as a sophomore (2003-04) and Colonial Athletic Association Runner-Up, was a member of the Top 15 Division I team.

Prior to his time with the Pride, Manarte competed for Sachem High School in Long Island, compiling a 108-13 career record. The former Suffolk County Champion and three-time All-County wrestler led Sachem to a league title in 2000, while earning All-American accolades as a senior. A New York State Freestyle Champion and a 2000 Empire State Games gold medalist, Manarte, placed third at the New York State Championships and seventh at Nationals.

“We are excited to have John join our program. He has wrestled at the elite levels of Division I and has trained under some of the nation’s top coaches. He truly brings a great attitude into our room,” said Stevens head coach Michael Clayton.
