On September 28 at 7 p.m. reknown peace activist Arun Gandhi will speak at the Hamline United Methodist Church. Grandson of the peaceful leader Mohandas K. "Mahatma" Gandhi, Arun Gandhi has become an international figurehead for nonviolence and social programs for the poor of the world. An ardent activist promoting the disillusionment caused by anger and the violence that stems from this anger, Arun Gandhi will address the Hamline community and those willing to come for free of charge.
With his late wife, Sunanda, Anun Gandhi has devoted much of his life to helping other people. According to his online biography, Anun grew up in South Africa in the midst of Apartheid, finding no consolation for the amount of anger and violence he was subjected to. After leaving South Africa, Anun moved to India where he has established many schools in impoverished regions and helped thousands of people in need of food and shelter.
Anun attributes much to his grandfather, Mohandas K. "Mahatma" Gandhi, as can be seen by the amount of times he is referenced on Anun's website. Anun is obviously proud to have learned from his grandfather and uses his teaching of Sarvodaya, meaning the awakening of all.
