First reported by the New York Daily News and confirmed by Joe Schad of ESPN, Charlie Weis has been relieved of his duties as head coach of Notre Dame's football team. Notre Dame officials have denied the early reports but an announcement might not be too far away.
It has been widely suspected for a while now that Weis has coached his final game for the Fighting Irish. Under Weis Notre Dame has gone 35-27 but just 16-21 since coaching the Fighting Irish to the Sugar Bowl in the 2006 season. Under Weis Notre Dame went to three bowl games but have a record of just 1-2. Weis went to BCS bowls in his first two seasons, prompting Notre Dame to extend his contract before whispers about the NFL got any louder, but it should be noted that Weis took Notre Dame to those prestigious bowl games with players recruited by his predecessor, Tyrone Willingham. Weis's personal touch has lead Notre Dame to just one bowl game, the Hawaii Bowl last season.
It was believed that the former New England Patriots offensive coordinator would elevate the offense at Notre Dame to a new level that would be tough to defend against. This season Notre Dame finally got their offense running but defense continued to plaque the Irish, as it traditionally has under Weis. When Weis came to his Alma Mater he stated that his team would be at a distinctive advantage in the game plan, but more often than not it seemed as though Notre Dame was falling well short of the lofty expectations that the Notre Dame community holds their football team to.
Weis may still have a future in the NFL as an offensive coordinator somewhere in the league. As for Notre Dame the coaching search is officially on. Cincinnati's Brian Kelly is a popular favorite to top the list in South Bend, but the Irish will likely take some time to form their wish list.
Notre Dame will likely make the officiall announcement Tuesday.
But wait! There's more!
Tomorrow could be a newsworthy day for Florida State as the decision on Bobby Bowden's coaching future will be announced on Tuesday. According to Florida State Seminoles Examiner Corey Dowlar Bowden has the ultimate decision ahead of him;
According to Bowden, it is still his decision as to whether he will return.
“Well, I will make the decision,” Bowden said adamantly.... “I’ll make the decision,” Bowden said of whether or not the ball was in his court.
- As reported by Corey Dowlar, Florida State Examiner November 30, 2009
Tomorrow should be interesting.
