The Examiner.com College Football Award ballots are in, the votes have been tabulated, and now it is time to announce our top players at each position. Over the past week the college football writers on Examiner.com made our picks for the top players in college football. As the regular season and conference championship games have all been played, with the exception of the annual Army-Navy game (this weekend), college football awards will be coming at you left and right. So we joined in the fun.

Our ninth individual award goes to Alabama junior linebacker Rolando McClain.

McClain beat out his fellow SEC standout linebacker, Brandon Spikes of Florida, by being the only linebacker to receive ten first place votes from Examiner writers. McClain received 38 overall votes while Spikes came in second with 23 votes overall.

Alabama has a defense full of talent but what makes McClain stand out is his 101 tackles. McClain totaled 51 solo tackles and assisted on 50 more. He also recorded four sacks and had two interceptions. Four times this season McClain recorded double digit tackles. His 13 tackles at Kentucky was a season high for the talented linebacker. In that game McClain recorded the first of his two interceptions (the second came the following week at Mississippi) and his nine solo tackles against the Wildcats was also a season high.

Just this week McClain was also named the winner of the 2009 Dick Butkus Award, presented annually to the top linebacker in the country by none other than Hall of Famer Dick Butkus himself.

The SEC also recognized McClain as the conference's best defensive player by a vote of league coaches. It should not be a surprise then that McClain was also named to the SEC's All-Conference first team defense as well.
