New money available for veterans
A new GI Bill has gone into effect, providing money for those who have served in the armed forces at any time since September 10, 2001. The money can be used for college tuition, room and board, and textbooks. There is also a cost-of-living provision. One new twist on this bill, separating it from the original GI Bill, is that this money can be used for training. For example, police academy training is covered.
The amount of money available will be based on the length of service since September 10, 2001. For those who have served 36 months, 100% of the benefits will be available. This gradually decreases for varied times of service and bottoms out at 40% for those who have served between 90 days and 6 months.
An amendment was added by Representative Chet Edwards of Texas to extend the benefits to the children of those who have fallen since September 10, 2001.
