Stressed About Money? 5 Simple Steps to Help Pay for College.
by Jim Wolfston
1. Save Money Every Week. Students who are not yet in college should open a savings account and start putting a monthly allotment into this account. Students who are already in college will also benefit from this practice; simply putting aside twenty dollars per week can help in the long run.
2. Look at on-campus jobs as a source of income. Many on-campus jobs are flexible with students’ schedules and have work-study options. Think about working in a library or other quiet atmosphere where you can work and study at the same time.
3. Use summer vacation to get ahead. Even though summer vacations are a time to enjoy some peace and quiet, think about getting a part-time or full-time job. Try and pick a job in a field that interests you, because you never know if a summer job could turn into a job offer once you graduate. Employers are always looking to hire those with experience.
4. Look online for scholarship resources. More substantively, www.educationconservancy.org provides reflective advice about what should matter to students in choosing and funding a college education. On the creative side, www.collegenet.com offers a college and scholarship search engine but also provides students with a unique social networking experience. Via social networking, students can earn college money by citing topics of interest to them, writing about these topics, and then determining by popular vote who will win $15,000 in scholarships each month.
5. Be smart about saving. Knowing how to save and where to look for savings can save you money and significant stress during your college career. Start planning early and be diligent about searching for all the scholarship options available to you. It is never too early or too late to work toward funding your college education.
