I’m always on the lookout for unexpected twists in the stuff I wear every day, like hoodies and t-shirts. Revival Ink of Seattle does just that. Their shirts are printed with cute patterns that you can’t find in a brick and mortar store. The Dandy Zip Hoodie looks similar to what you’d find at American Apparel but the print on it adds a whimsical touch. I own a gray American Apparel flex fleece hoodie like every other Seattle University student, it’s pretty boring and I wish I had bought one like this with a little more detail on it.
The Koi fish shirt is inspired by Seattle’s Japanese Gardens. It is made of organic and bamboo fabric so it’s softer than your average shirt.
Interview with Tara Smith of Revival Ink
My name is Tara Smith, and I live in Seattle Washington. I am a screen printer, artist, and clothing designer. I have a bachelor's degree in fine art from Cornish. I enjoy gardening, hiking, camping, and being crafty.
My Etsy shop is called Revival Ink. I make earth friendly, illustrated apparel. I do all the artwork, and printing myself in the basement of my house. My printing is all eco-friendly: using non-toxic, water-based inks, and organic cotton & bamboo fabrics.
My creative process starts with my sketchbook. I'm always drawing things, and when I get something I really like, I find an original garment that would look great with the illustration. Next, I scan the drawing into the computer to perfect it. Most times, I modify the drawing to fit the shape and cut of the garment. I like to add little details, like a print on a pocket or a hood. Then I make a screen of the image, and squeegee ink across it to make a print. I like to listen to very loud rock music while I'm doing this; it helps my creative process immensely.
Each Revival Ink item is hand-printed, and therefore one of a kind. I take great pride in the handmade process, and that is where the name Revival Ink comes from. It represents a revival of making things with our hands. Making things artistic, special, and unique using ink. Support local artists, and love our earth. Let the Revival Begin!
