WSU applications may be closed, but you still have options

UW Bothell offers a variety of innovative interdisciplinary studies.

In light of the economic downturn, it was suspected that enrollment at state institutions of higher education could jump as students sought a less expensive route to their first degree.  Add to that a budget crisis that is demanding significant cuts on those same state campuses, and you have a bit of a “perfect storm”.  It’s no wonder that on April 14, the Seattle Times reported that WSU had stopped accepting applications for incoming freshmen before May 1.

Now, before you panic, this has nothing to do with those of you who have already been accepted to WSU.  You still have till May 1 to submit your deposit.  Breathe! Your place is still waiting for you.

No, this has to do with those seniors who hadn’t even applied to WSU yet – even though the priority deadline was January 31.  It’s pretty clear in the WSU catalog that if students don’t meet that deadline, there’s no guarantee that their application will be considered.  Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened this year.  Because of budget contraints, WSU had to stop accepting freshman applications earlier than in previous years.  It’s a regrettable case of procrastination catching up with people in a bad way, but it's not the end of the world.

If you happen to be a senior who finds him or herself in the position of having to find another college to apply to, you’re in luck.  The Evergreen State College, Central Washington University and Eastern Washington University are all still accepting applications.  These schools are definitely worth considering and may actually end up being a better fit for you than WSU or even UW.  If you still have your heart set on being a Cougar, WSU Vancouver is still accepting applications.  And, just in case purple and gold runs in your veins, both UW Bothell and UW Tacoma are also still accepting applications.  While satellite campuses may have a more limited selection of majors, they may also have exactly what you’re looking for.  Don't rule them out till you do some investigating.

Keep in mind that the priority application date for several of the schools mentioned above has already passed.  Consequently, they will only be accepting applications until they, like WSU, run out of room - or money.  So, stop procrastinating and start doing some research.  That perfect school could still be waiting for you.
