Taming the college fair. Step 2: Go to the fair

Mt. Holyoke College, MA - Note the amoeba-shaped rugs

Even though you may have done all your preparation, there’s still more to know about making the most of your time at the college fair.  To really have it all under control, you’ve got to know what will be waiting for you and how to navigate the fair.

Before you get there
Decide on a strategy.  If you have a family member with you, decide how they can help you the most.   For example, if your family is concerned about financing your college education, it might be a good idea for an adult family member to spend time at the financial aid table getting some questions answered while you talk to the colleges.

Consider what you’re wearing.
There’s no need to get all dressed up, but you don’t want to only be remembered for being inappropriately dressed either. Don’t let your clothes do the talking for you.

Plan to arrive early.
If you get there early, you can move at a more leisurely pace.  Also, the later you get there, the more crowded it gets and the less likely the college reps will have as much time to spend with you.

Make sure you have everything you need.
Be sure you have your lists of schools and questions, as well as your notebook, address labels and a pen.

Once you arrive at the fair
Pick up a map.  Depending on the venue, tables may be set up in one room or in a number of rooms.  The map will help you find the colleges you want to visit more easily.  Take a moment to circle those colleges on the map, so you don’t waste time backtracking.

Pick up a bag.
You’re going to need it for all the brochures you pick up.

Visit the college tables.
Ask the questions you decided on, but be sure to listen to the other questions being asked as well.  You could learn something very important.  Make sure you pick up business cards, so you know who to contact if you have more questions later.

Take notes.
If a rep says something you definitely want to remember or something you want to ask about later, be sure to write it down.  Also make note of any rep who really goes out of their way for you.

BREATHE
You will be getting a lot of information in a short amount of time and that may feel a little overwhelming.  Just take a breath.  You’ll have plenty of time to sort it out later.

Check out the counselors’ table.
Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed in general or just have a few specific questions, this is the place to stop.  The counselors sitting there have lots of experience and can probably help you out. (If you happen to be at the PNACAC Spring College Fair in Seattle, I hope you’ll stop by the counselors’ table and say hello.  I'll be there all day.)

Now you’re ready.  Enjoy the experience and check back here for some tips on how to put all the information you gathered to good use.

I found that one good way to "weed out" some of the colleges was to ask them right away if they have the program that interests the students. That helps so that you don't end up with so much useless clutter in your bag and you can concentrate on the schools that are truly options.
