My 5 favorite college search sites

Getting ready to begin you college search, but aren’t sure where to start?  One of the best things to do is test drive a few college search engines to see which ones you like the best and which ones offer the greatest amount of information for the time you spend there.  Here are a few you may want to check out:

Collegeboard
This is one of the most popular search engines with students.  It gives you lots of criteria to choose from which is great, just be sure you don’t get too picky or you won’t have many colleges to choose from!  It also has tons of info on the SATs and you can register for the test here. It also allows you to compare financial aid packages.

CollegeData
Though not the best known of the search engines, it has some great features including one that helps predict your chances of getting in based on the school's admission info from previous years.  All you have to do is complete your profile and every time you look up a school or do a search it will include your chances of admission.   While the chances they show are no guarantee, and should not be taken as one, they can help you to make sure your applications are balanced between “dream schools” and “probable schools”.

College Navigator

This site is maintained by the U.S. Department of Education.  It doesn’t have some of the fancier features of other sites, but it does have some very useful info like campus crime statistics, accreditation, and types of financial aid being offered to students.  If you start your search on another site, be sure you check this one out before you finalize your list.

CollegeView
What I like best about this site are two special tools it has.  It allows you to compare colleges side-by-side which is a great time saving feature.  It also gives you the option to request information from a college with the click of a button.  I would start with one of the other search engines then come here to use these tools.

Petersons
This site is easy to use and provides great information right at your fingertips.  If you already have a school in mind, you can just type in their name and you will get not only their information, but a list of similar schools you might also like.  This one gets my vote for most user friendly.
