I’ve never met Gene Kalb, but I get an email from him every Thursday. In this email, Gene provides me with a link to my very own personal clipping service focused on news, trends, and happenings in the world of college admissions—all neatly bundled in my FREE edition of High School (HS) Counselor Week.
Born out of a stroke of genius and a real desire to be of service to the college counseling community, HS Counselor Week is a compilation of links to stories and resources targeted to high school counselors, college admission officers, and anyone with a stake in the college admissions process. But it’s not just for the professionals. Parents, students, hobbyists, and other admissions junkies are invited to subscribe and Gene will gladly add you to his weekly correspondence list.
There’s not too much glitzy about HS Counselor Week. Subscriptions are divided into editions—Western, Southern, NorthEast, and MidWest. Each edition has its own color scheme, and I receive the maroon and gray NE edition. I could as easily receive the turquoise and orange Southern edition—DC seems to fall somewhere in between.
Within each edition, links are provided to articles subdivided into areas of interest—student debt, college admissions process/strategies, gap year, parents, summer, athletics, etc. Links to articles with specific geographic content are also provided. But I really appreciate the attention paid to important subjects such as bullying and teen drinking. These articles never fail to break my heart.
What’s truly amazing about what Gene does is that somehow he manages to read every article in every major media outlet in the country and hit the best, most useful, and current in college admissions. You’ll find links to the Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, Inside Higher Ed, Time Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, US News & World Report, and the Washington Post.
Smaller and more regional news outlets are also included such as the Roanoke Times or the Charlotte Observer. And once in a while, links appear to columns by an obscure college admissions commentator who writes for the Examiner.com. Those are the weeks I sit up and pay attention.
Gene is always open to suggestions and comments. He makes it very easy to subscribe and/or unsubscribe depending on where you are in the college admissions process. The site is available for syndication and a few unobtrusive ads are accepted to help defray the cost of running the service.
Virtually every counselor I know subscribes to HS Counselor Week. It’s free, dependable, and a truly wonderful resource.
Thank you, Gene. And have a great summer (HS Counselor Week takes an annual vacation during the summer months).

My students and parents think I'm a genius, even though I tell them all my sources. Thanks for helping make me a better, more informed counselor.
I couldn't agree more with the kudos. This newsletter is one of the most useful and informative ones that I receive. The breadth of resources is great. Thank you, Gene.
