New York Times writer Julie Bick explored the booming business of private college counseling in her article "Navigators for the College Bound," which appeared in Sunday's paper. While most families are worried about, and saving for, college costs, others are shelling out hundreds of dollars an hour for an expert to guide them through the admissions process.
What's really interesting is the mother of one profiled student who noted that she could have helped her student herself, but chose instead to work on her career to make the money to pay someone else to do it. Private college counselors perform a much-needed service, and in some cases could lead students to admission at more suitable schools than they might have found on their own. But they're also expensive.
If you can't afford upwards of $200. an hour for a private counselor, rest assured. All the information you need is available and free. This blog is a great place to start! If you have a question about where to find information or an idea for a future post, email me at lauren@laurenstarkey.com. I've been through it all before with dozens of students, and this year my work is closer to home with my son, a junior in high school.
