Steve Irwin, the irrepressible “Crocodile Hunter," has been honored by his native country with a coin in its Inspirational Australians series. Irwin is the second release in the series.
The coin was officially launched at the Australian Zoo prior to Steve Irwin Day November 15. (More information about the zoo and Irwin at www.australiazoo.com.au/.)
The coin has a face value of $1 and is struck in aluminum bronze. It weighs 9 grams (.32 ounces) and is 25 millimeters (one inch) in diameter. The coin features the familiar grinning Irwin, surrounded by wildlife and wilderness.
“This incredibly energetic Australian left an indelible imprint on everyone he came in contact with, because of his undeniable passion for Australian native animals and reptiles,” said the mint.
