Downstairs of Sugar House Coffee is bright and airy.
One coffeeshop I love that I have yet to give its own exclusive review is Sugar House Coffee, 1045 E 2100 S. Although it has changed a lot since moving a few blocks away after renovation took place in the area, Sugar House Coffee still has its spunk.
Most notable of its good qualities, Sugar House is huge! With a downstairs, upstairs and patio, there are always plenty of seats. The one exception is on Sunday afternoons when the café is full of students chained to laptops and groups of friends rejuvenating their bodies on shots of espresso before the work week begins.
The downstairs offers a front row seat to various musical and other performances that Sugar House hosts each week. Thursday is open jazz jam from 7 p.m. until close. Friday is the University of Utah concert series, and Saturday is various live performances. On Sunday, enjoy open mic night and consider signing up yourself. A small stage in the middle of the room showcases events, and a mural of 2100 S buildings covers the wall.

Check out the glass display case for fresh pastries and parfaits.
I like the upstairs of Sugar House because it is open so that the downstairs is easily seen, but separate enough to provide a good study space and atmosphere conducive to private conversations. The walls upstairs are covered in unique local artwork that is for sale.
A fenced off area out back makes for a nice patio. The space offers some shade and a few tables, and the Sugar House workers like to hang out there on their breaks. There is also a sign of upcoming events on the side of the building.
If you’ve come for food and drink, Sugar House is sure to satisfy your appetite and quench your thirst. Signature beverages include the sweet Karmel Sutra (carmel and white chocolate), the powerful Cuban Revolver (brown sugar, vanilla and 6 shots of espresso), and the La Dee-Dah-Tee (almond, macadamia nut and cinnamon). Sugar House also serves Rimini coffee beans, which can be purchased by the pound for $9.
For food, Sugar House has lots of items to choose from, including many vegetarian and vegan options. Take your pick from bagels with vegan cream cheese and hummus plates to ham and Swiss panini and salads. And of course, you can’t go wrong with a fat slice of chocolate cake or a Mexican wedding cookie.
Sugar House Coffee is open everyday from 7 a.m. to midnight.
