Mestizo Coffeehouse and the Mestizo Institute of Culture and Arts (MICA) have teamed up with community members and organizations for the Five Million Dollar Fund, a project designed to create a permanent community art center and museum on Salt Lake’s Westside.
According to Mestizo’s newsletter: This institution will serve as a full service community art center and museum, bringing a variety of programming, exhibitions and educational opportunities to one of Salt Lake's most under-served neighborhoods. By increasing access to the arts and civic engagement, we aim to cerate a bridge for children from their neighborhoods to colleges and universities, as well as strengthening the voice and narrative of Salt Lake's Westside and under-served communities.
Artist Ruby Chacon will be at Mestizo
The Five Million Dollar Fund is a fundraiser in which donors buy one pixel for one dollar each. The website will display every pixel purchased by uncovering part of a piece of artwork. If you donate $100 dollars, you can submit an image representing yourself or your organization as a permanent part of the website.
Money donated through the project will go toward purchasing a building in the area and transforming it into a center for sustainable programming, internships and artistic and civic engagement opportunities. Check out the contacts page for more specific information.
A launch party for the Five Million Dollar Fund will be this Wednesday, September 23 from 6-10 p.m. at Mestizo Coffeehouse, 631 W North Temple. Artist Ruby Chacon will join the celebration.
