Walk into Mestizo Coffeehouse and you may think you are no longer in Utah. The combination of Central and South American décor, along with Native American influences, gives this coffeehouse a unique flair.
Mestizo is tucked into an apartment complex on 631 W North Temple. Its bright orange walls are covered with large paintings, and a chalkboard entitled “Community Thoughts” holds inspiring quotes to read while sipping coffee. An event calendar on the wall lists all of the meeting times and events held at Mestizo. Open mic night is Monday from 8-11 p.m. Tuesday is movie night at 7 p.m., and poetry open mic night is Wednesday from 8-11 p.m.
A diverse menu selection includes tamales, caprese salad and sandwiches. Fair trade coffee is available upon request. Near the counter are various items for sale including Obama t-shirts, unique greeting cards, bottle cap magnets and unusual knick knacks.
The coffeeshop is also home to MICA, the Mestizo Institute of Culture and Arts. This gallery features local artists and aims to highlight the works of people from various cultures. Currently, a series of graffiti-inspired paintings are on display.
Mestizo is open Mon-Thurs 7-11 p.m., Fri-Sat 7-12 a.m. and Sun 7-10 p.m.

thanks for this article on Mestizo, it''s right on, that this place is NOT of Utah... and yet it's so uniquely Salt Lake in that there is so much of South America, Central, and Native Americans IN Salt Lake! People on the east side forget this since they are all predominantly European decendants, but that's what west SLC is all about, the Utahn's who are of every other decent in the world~
