Summer heat calls for cold drinks. With coffee, this can be a challenge. Cold brewed coffee, often called Toddy Coffee is an easy-to-make alternative to hot coffee beverages. Toddy Brew Systems are inexpensive and versatile. Tea can also be prepared in this brewer. This method of coffee preparation produces a coffee concentrate, providing multiple uses in meal and drink preparation. For best results, follow this recipe:
Start with one pound of coarsely ground coffee and 9 cups of filtered water. Filtered water prevents metallic and chemical tastes from making their way into the coffee.
- Alternate between a quarter-pound of ground coffee and approximately 2 cups of water to ensure proper saturation of the coffee grounds.
- Allow to steep, or rest for 12-18 hours. 12 hours provides best results for a balanced cup of cold brew coffee. The more time the coffee steeps the more acidic flavors arise in the cup.
The system includes a spout located at the bottom of the brewer. Remove the stopper and brew into a container (one is included in the system). This is the concentrated coffee. The concentrated coffee will yield 6 cups. This concentrate can be used for iced coffee and cocktail beverages. This recipe works well with the Roasterie’s Four Bean Blend. This blend is well balanced with a mellow acidity, working well for longer brew times (16 Hours). Four bean blends take four coffee regions and create a balanced cup, utilizing each region’s primary characteristic. See below for some cold brewed recipes.
