And who wouldn’t want to be present in the space that Teri Meehan and Debbi Main have turned into Wash Perk? Teri recalls how amazed she was when they opened Wash Perk about 18 months ago. “We were greeted by our neighbors who were filled with good wishes and caring warmth.”
Wash Perk is a balance of simplicity and inclusiveness, just as Teri likes to maintain in her life overall. She treads lightly on the earth and makes continuous efforts to minimize Wash Perk’s global footprint by using eco-friendly products, doing business with other Denver small businesses and being a participant in the Denver Compost Pilot Program.
When opening shop, Meehan never had the illusion that Wash Perk would be a moneymaker. “I wasn’t thinking of the nitty gritty detail of having a business. Good coffee, good place, good people, good neighborhood, that’s what this is about.” Teri’s connection to her community is apparent, as she calls customers by name and says, “Go ahead, help yourself!” when one man asks if he can take a squash from the community garden right outside the door.
Wash Perk is young, but clearly serves a purpose in the community. It is a place that connects people to people and facilitates comfortable conversation. Local artists are able to display their work on the walls and good coffee remains a constant.
