Since late 2007, Big City Coffee has been brewing and baking in Boise's ultra-hip Linen District on Grove between 14th and 15th. The former farm supply store, complete with working garage door, lends some small town cred to this local small business. Not that Big City owner Sarah Fendley needs it. She opened the first incarnation of Big City on State St. in 2001, then sold it to bring her business savvy to the then-up-and-coming neighborhood.
And residents are glad she did. Bright red picnic tables greet visitors just outside the door, and ornate mirrors, vintage signs and farm style tables cover nearly every inch of space inside. Groups of college students, business men and cyclists gather around their mason jars of iced coffee or plate-sized Sunrise Muffins giving the place an inviting, homey feel.
Display cases at the register tempt you with chocolate-chocolate cookies the size of your face, berry oat bars, and cherry pie scones. The menu is rounded out with local breakfast faves like the BBC, a toasted bagel with bacon, egg & cheese, and the Spanish Breakfast, signature steamed eggs, roasted red potato's, warm tortillas, tomato's and salsa. Try a generously portioned veggie wrap for lunch, or if you're watching your diet order the OBGYF, homemade granola, yogurt and fresh fruit.
Whatever you eat, make sure to grab a $1.50 bottomless coffee mug for Big City's signature bean, the Big Titty Blend. Or better yet, grab a bag of beans to go. A portion of the proceeds from these go to breast cancer research.
Prices are more than reasonable considering you probably won't finish the huge portions. And free wi-fi is available. The friendly staff starts their day at 6:00 a.m. every day of the week and closes up shop around 6:00 p.m. Stop in and join the family!
