Caffeine is many things. It is a drug, a phytochemical, a health benefit, and a health risk. Found in foods that many of us could not live without, caffeine is unavoidable, and may as well be embraced. In moderation, it can be a good thing, increasing energy, mental stamina, and blood circulation. In excess, caffeine has potential to be very dangerous, contributing to ovarian cysts, adrenal exhaustion, heart disease, and high blood pressure. So, how much caffeine is in that cup of coffee?
- cup of coffee.....135mg
- decaf.....4mg
- 1 ounce espresso.....50mg
- black tea....55mg
- green tea.....35mg
- iced tea.....30mg
- white tea.....15mg
- can of cola....45mg
- hot cocoa.....10mg
- 1 ounce piece of milk chocolate.....8mg
- 1 ounce piece of dark chocolate.....20mg
There are many different recommendations for how much caffeine a day is too much. More than four cups a day is generally considered excess. Health Canada recommends no more than 400mg a day, although less for women of child-bearing age. 200-300mg a day is considered moderate consumption - that's at least two full cups before its time to switch to decaf. For tea drinkers, you can drink more than you could probably handle before it becomes too much.
