If a big concert or the big noise of a bar band isn’t music to your ears, you might want to try a local coffeehouse. Some of the best local musicians play regularly at these intimate venues, and you’ll not only enjoy good coffee and food, but you’re much more likely to leave with your eardrums intact. And, you’ll get to meet and greet the artist(s), which is probably the best thing about coffeehouse music.
Here are a few places to check out:
Cannon Mine Coffee, 210 S. Public Rd., Lafayette, CO, 80026, 303/665-0625
“The Mine” features local musicians every Saturday night, and many Friday nights as well. The mission of Cannon Mine is “Where social responsibility meets great coffee” and they back that up by serving fair trade coffee and local Left Hand Brewery and New Belgium beers. You can also choose from a short but varied wine list, or just have them add a Kahlua or Bailey’s to your coffee.
Rock & Soul Café, 5290 Arapahoe, Boulder, CO 80302, 303-443-5108
This is a great place to see a show. The atmosphere is a little more like a bar (and they do serve beer and wine) but still manages to maintain the coffeehouse feel. Live music by a diverse array of musicians is served up almost nightly and the music starts at 7:30. Just check out the calendar for who’s playing when, as well as links to the artist sites for a sampling of their music. You can purchase tickets in advance at the café or over the phone.
The Laughing Goat, 1709 Pearl St., Boulder, CO 80302, (303) 440-4628
Owned and operated by some of the staff of the old Penny Lane (defunct since 2005), and billed as: Artisan Coffeehouse, Gallery & Community Performance Venue. They have live music, poetry readings and exhibitions of local artists. Check out the calendar for the specifics.
Caffé Luna, 800 Coffman St., Longmont, CO 80501, (303) 702-9996
This coffeehouse is literally an old Victorian house; very charming and a wonderful gathering place. Open mike is on Wednesdays, and Friday and Saturday nights feature both local and traveling musicians. Music genres include country and original folk, Celtic and jazz. Take cash with you because they don’t take credit cards. Luna also offers a breakfast menu, and sandwiches for lunch.
