As it is National Rum Day I thought I would talk about Rum. I recently received a sampling of Mount Gay Eclipse Rums. All I can say is Wow! After trying these rums, I did some research and came up with a couple interesting facts about Mount Gay. Most of the following is directly from Mount Gay, but I am in agreement with their tasting notes. They also say it more eloquently than I would...LOL
The original distillery for Mount Gay Rum was deeded in 1703. The original document lists the property and the equipment found on it, equipment essential for the manufacture of rum.
"Two stone windmills... one boiling house with seven coppers, one curing house and one still house."
This confirms that rum production was well underway by 1703, making Mount Gay Rum the oldest rum in Barbados, and more importantly, the world.
According to Mount Gay, in 1910, the twin phenomena of a total solar eclipse and the passage of Halley’s Comet inspired the creation of Eclipse, rum whose surpassing depth and complexity epitomize the art of Barbadian rum making. Lavishly awarded and highly lauded, this noble blend of single and double distilled rums has enchanted generations of rum lovers the world over.
Let’s start with Mount Gay Eclipse. It is a blend of rums from two to seven years. It is golden amber in color, and It bears a luxuriously complex aroma that’s rich, seamless harmony is interwoven with distinctive floral and fruity notes of apricot and banana, with hints of vanilla and a subtle smokiness imparted by the Kentucky oak barrels in which the rum is patiently aged.
Next is the Mount Gay Eclipse Silver. A blend of rums around 2 years old
single and double distilled and triple filtered. This rum is extremely clean on the palate. Subtle hints of peppermint, with an underlying complexity revealing hints of citrus & banana. Eclipse Silver ends on a clean note with a faint hint of licorice, revealing the rum’s finesse. This rum also works very well for cocktails that call for vodka.
Moving on, next is Mount Gay Extra Old Rum. As they say “With Age Comes Perfection”. This rum is an opulent blend of the finest aged spirits. Slowly matured in Kentucky oak, this artfully crafted rum is the fruit of a unique, centuries-old distillation process. The result is one of the most award-winning rums in the world, a spirit for the most
demanding of connoisseurs. Brilliantly luminescent, Extra Old has a luxuriously complex bouquet and an exceedingly smooth, lingering finish. Its rich oak character is balanced to perfection with notes of ripe banana and toast, followed by vanilla, pastry and warm spice. A perfect example of the finesse that only time
can bring, Extra Old is a true taste of paradise from the rum that invented rum.
Last but by no means last is Mount Gay Rum 1703 Old Cask Selection. Born of the golden sugar cane and pristine water of Barbados, 1703 Old Cask Selection is a true symbol of the unique, centuries-old excellence of Mount Gay Rum. Blended entirely from the treasures
of Mount Gay’s prized reserve, each aged for 10-30 years, it is a masterpiece of perfect sumptuousness, a deliciously complex nectar created by the oldest producer of refined rum in the world. .jpg)
Exceptionally luminescent, it presents a deep, rich bouquet of oak, caramel and leather, seamlessly intertwined with mellow notes of ripe banana, stewed fruit and soft spices melting slowly into a smooth, lingering finish.
