Mya, one of the hottest r&b stars in the world, answered 11 questions that fans want to know. Here is the rundown of what she's been up to, her future plans, and what does she do in her spare time.
1. What was it like growing up in our Nation's capital of Washington DC?
I grew up in both Washington, DC and Maryland & I must say some of the best seafood comes from the Chesapeake. The metropolitan area has a culture so rich in the performing arts and is one of the major melting pot districts in the world with diverse walks of life within. Great upbringing because of it.
2. How did you first break into the music business?
Through an independent label in Washington DC by the name of University Music Entertainment founded by Haqq Islam. R&B groups Dru Hill & Pure Soul were the first acts signed here.
3. Who was your biggest musical inspiration growing up?
Many different influences in entertainment, from dancers, musicians, actors to singers, From The Nicholas Brothers to Judy Garland. But mostly my great grandmother Alberta in the church and my Dad who always had a band over rehearsing.
4. Is there are an artist that you would like to record with that you haven't in the past?
Smokey Robinson.
5. What was it like being on 'Dancing w/ the Stars'?
I had a blast! I love challenges and environments that put my threshold for pain & determination to be the best to the test. Lots of long hours, dedication & going the extra mile is fun to me because there's an end result and transformation within yourself you get to witness. It was so worth just that.
6. I know you have been in some films such as Chicago and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights; any plans for new movie roles in the near future?
Of course. A bit of television, film and theater.
7. When are you projecting to release your next album? And what do you think the first single could be?
I'll decide to release what's classified as a "worldwide album" when the proper professional teams & support are in order and in place to do it "the right way". In the meantime like I've done in the past, I have the option to release projects in select territory releases or mixtapes independently in which I own the masters to.
8. What advice would you give an aspiring singer in the music industry?
It's important to not only love & be passionate about what you do, but to know what drives you. Is it money, fame, a perceived lifestyle, the chance to connect & heal people or all of the above. If you are not born into money or don't have access to millions of dollars, then I'd really suggest coming up with a game plan to fund the recording of your music & vision. The investing of equipment is even smarter to empower yourself to be able to record whenever you'd like-free of charge. If you are trying to shop yourself to any company/label, be prepared to also invest in a video camera to capture your performances, photoshoot for your visual direction. This will allow you to put a visual package for presentation. Companies not only want to hear, but see what you can bring from a performance and visual place and determine whether or not you as n artist are marketable. Perfect your craft, find your nitch, surround yourself around other talent, ask questions & make sure you have a personal relationship with God at all times.
9. Any possible tour plans for 2010?
Spot dates only at this time as I'm recovering from ankle surgery.

11. Other than singing, what do you like to do for fun?
Bowling, water sports, spa days with my girls, movie/wine/hookah night, Fight Night at my house
(Boxing is my fav sport), and anything that involves FOOD!

i dont think i'll ever get another mya album to add to my mya collection. ive been waiting so long and following mya career hoping maybe one day she finally release a worldwide album. but it seems like it will never happen. so for now i guess i just enjoy her mixtapes.
