2009 climate change story of the year - Climategate

The top climate story of 2009 - The Climategate email scandalClimate change was a hot issue in 2009 throughout all 12 months of the year. From the inauguration of a new U.S. president in January to an international climate change summit in December, climate and man’s possible impact on it was big news. No single event however could compare to the incident that rocked climate change science and spanned the globe on November 19th - the Climategate email scandal.

News first broke on blog site “The Air Vent” that thousands of emails and documents from Britain’s Climate Research Unit, University of East Anglia, had been leaked onto the Internet. From there word spread at light speed to other sites including Watts Up With That, Climate Audit, Climate Change FraudClimate Depot, and of course Examiner.com.

The contents contained messages to and from a veritable who’s who in climate change science. Michael Mann, Phil Jones, Kevin Trenberth, Ben Santer and many others saw their private correspondence exposed. The words the group spoke amongst each other proved to be shocking and led to charges of collusion, deception, destruction of data, modification of climate data, attempts to foil the release of public information and more.

Phrases like ‘hide the decline’, ‘cut the last few points off,’ and ‘reduce the ocean blip’ were said to show the scientists and purposely modified climate data to support their theories. Other messages showed the scientists asked each other to delete messages they were worried could fall into ‘the wrong hands’ and demonstrated their disdain for anyone who disagreed with their theories. Concerted efforts were launched by the men to ensure no dissenting opinions were published or given credence, no matter their scientific merit.

While the mainstream media largely ignored the event for weeks, the furor continued to grow on the Internet. As the messages and documents were analyzed more evidence that painted the scientists in an unflattering light continued to be discovered. By the time some of the mainstream media acknowledged the event, it had taken on a life of its own led by Internet news sites and blogs.

The scientists launched a defense of the communications saying they were being ‘taken out of context’ but analysis showed that much of the meaning of their writings was quite clear. After trying to sweep the scandals aside, investigations into the event were launched by two major educational institutions and the UK Met Office. Lawsuits were filed and the ethics of the scientists was called into question.

The idea that the purveyors of the science could be corrupt at worst or at best had chosen to set the science aside to become advocates cracked the foundation on which the anthropogenic global warming theory was founded. Many are left asking: Can we believe the scientists? The emails certainly reveal that they are not the impartial presenters of data that they are supposed to be.

The Climategate email scandal has cast a deep shadow over climate change science resulting in wide ranging fallout that will continue to be felt for a very long time. It is said to have been at least partially responsible for the failure of the UN Climate Change Conference and certainly will impact the results of pending climate legislation not only in the United States but in other nation’s as well.

Whether one believes the charges or not, there is little doubt that Climategate is the 2009 climate change story of the year.

So the real deniers on climate change are the ones calling everyone else a denier on climate change? lol...

You have to handed to them though because even this late after the whole scam was exposed alot of people have not heard of Climatgate or know the details of the bogus research.

When you try to explain whats this is about their eyes glaze over and they mumble something about we have to save the earth.

Like I said they and the mass media did a good job MIS-INFORMING the masses 10 out of 10.

It is not enough that the climate files of CRU and Penn State be made public. The threads of Climategate lead to NASA/GISS, NCDC, UCAR, the Met Office, several 'peer reviewed" publications, Wikipedia and dozens of "scientists". Until the Augean stables have been cleansed the public's trust in science will continue to erode.

Most of the organisations implicated have been stonewalling for several years and will continue to do so until the top managers are replaced or indicted. It is sad that the future of "Climate Science" is now in the hands of lawyers.

    Climategate Forecast...
“• What is the current scientific consensus on the conclusions reached by Drs. Mann, Bradley and Hughes? [Referring to the hockey stick propagated in UN IPCC 2001 by Michael Mann.]
Ans: Based on the literature we have reviewed, there is no overarching consensus on MBH98/99. As analyzed in our social network, there is a tightly knit group of individuals who passionately believe in their thesis. However, our perception is that this group has a self-reinforcing feedback mechanism and, moreover, the work has been sufficiently politicized that they can hardly reassess their public positions without losing credibility.”

All we can do is apply to our legislators- to those who live in the US your Senators. To those of us who live in Europe the choice is much more limited and even I have appealed to Senator Inhofe as it seems to me the US Senate is more protective of the interests of the free world than the UK House of Commons.

Get out there and lobby! All politicians work on what they receive in the hope they will be re-elected.

I note the Vice- Chancellor of the East Anglian University in the UK is a historian and he has asked someone who appears to be independent to investigate the scandal. Jones of the CRU (Calypso Research Unit ("The whole idea of calypso song/ is that you make it up as you go along") has been suspended and the report apparently will be issued in late spring.

Has Penn State done as much? Perhaps you would e-mail the regents or whoever the head honchos are in US universities?

I do think however the tide has turned. Go for it!

    All the best,

We knew this was a scam when the Medieval Warm Period and Little Ice Age disappeared in their "research". The Vikings colonized Greenland during a period when it was lush and green. How could this have been if it wasn't warmern then? IIRC this was 800 to 1000 A.D. till about 1450. They grew grapes and made wine in Britain (it is too cool for this now, I believe). Most people who studied geology know these things. How did these "scientists" believe they could get away with this?

The editors at Wikipedia are still trying to re-write history. The global warming editor re-wrote over 5000 articles, and continues to censor anyone trying to correct the record. So right, the tide has turned, and the truth will out.

Hopefully the scientists who have had their careers damaged will sue the universities, institutions, and individuals responsible. This will help get public attention for these atrocities.

It is obvious those still supporting AGW in light of the emails have a socialist/financial agenda and despise this country. The release of these emails have exposed the inner workings of global environmental socialism, which will never be trusted again. To defeat these socialist frauds we must defeat the enablers, namely, the socialist democrats and boot their non american commie rear ends all the way to cuba in the next elections before they destroy this country.

When the Climate Research Unit's e-mails were leaked it was an embarrassing reminder that even academic research is political and that even scientists shape the results of their research. The scandal shouldn't distract us from the real issues of global warming and excessive carbon emissions.

The NWO who happens to control over 90% of the mass media will go to all ends to see that the truth is never revealed. They have large financial interests in keeping all in the dark.

Climate Change or Global Warming is a God thing!

Cloud cover and radiation from the sun is what primarily controls the temperature of the earth. “Global warming” and “Climate Change” are due to forces commonly called “Laws of nature.” If the laws of nature appear to be suspended, what we have then is commonly called a “miracle.”

    1. Even though carbon dioxide is the most abundant gas released in volcanic processes, it is not the most abundant gas in our atmosphere because it slowly dissolves in the liquid water on Earth and ultimately forms carbonate rocks.

    2. From the surface upward, the layers in Earth’s atmosphere are: troposphere (distinguished by the water cycle, which controls our weather

    3. The sources of energy for our atmosphere are sunlight and heat leaving the surface of Earth from the interior. Each layer of the atmosphere heats up until it can radiate as much energy as it receives from the sun and the layers below.

If Brown wins in Mass, Cap-n-Trade is DOA at the Senate. With 18% of the vote in, Brown has a 5% lead! I think we skeptics may all be singing about this foolish AGW BS .... DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD!!! Personally I don't care how much the enviroNAZIS whine about their fantasy climactic catastrophe, but I do care that these nutters would like to drive America back into the stone age by taxing every American for the sin of useing American greatest resource.. abundant energy.
