Humphrey Bogart was born 110 years ago this Christmas and Turner Classic Movies celebrates by giving over not just the Wednesday night schedule, but all day and night long each and every Wednesday throughout December airing a total of 64 movies featuring Bogie. There are a couple of documentaries mixed in that air multiple times, but otherwise set your DVR's, it's one airing apiece for the features.
A Bogie month is a far cry from a, no offense intended, lesser Star of the Month such as Leslie Caron or November's tribute to Grace Kelly, which while I won't deny the magnitude of her stardom certainly did offer a somewhat limited selection of films due to her short career on screen. With Bogart the word icon may seem overused, but then again it's wholly accurate.
TCM throughout December charters Bogie's entire career, somewhat chronologically, from supporting roles throughout December 2nd leading up to his breakout in "The Petrified Forest" which garners him B-leads and A-support alongside the likes of Edward G. Robinson and James Cagney throughout the 9th which also includes his second breakthrough picture, "High Sierra," airing at 1:30 am. By prime time on the 16th the Bogart star explodes with "The Maltese Falcon" and "Casablanca" and on the 23rd we're treated to 4 films featuring Bogart and Bacall. While the 30th may read weak compared to the proceeding weeks there are certainly some gems in there including "In a Lonely Place," "The Harder They Fall," and "The Caine Mutiny," wherein we're treated to the mature Bogart.
