Corvette's are a unique brand of automobile all to their own.  And their owner's and admirers are passionate.  There is even a National Corvette Museum supported by General Motors in Bowling Green, Kentucky that is the haloed grounds for Vette fans.  Chevrolet has no other car that has the following that the Corvette has and so it's not unusual that you would find that there is a day each year set aside to celebrate driving these sporty cars.

It was June 30th, 1953 in Flint, Michigan that production started on this iconic nameplate.  Then it was a odd experimental fiberglass bodied project with two seats, a 6 cylinder engine and a guy named Harley Earl at General Motors was behind the design (he would go on to be a legendary designer for General Motors that set the tone for the 50's automotive design).  In May of 1953, Zora Arkus Duntov began a career at General Motors and it was his influence that propelled the Corvette into the spotlight and frankly saved the brand by adding a performance edge that would be unmatched.  Considered the 'Father of The Corvette', the Duntov influence introduced the V8 engine to Corvette in 1955.  To prove that this was the 'real deal' in 1956 he took to the Pikes Peak Hillclimb event and using a pre-production prototype Chevy he set a stock car record.  He moved on to Daytona Beach in the same year and did 150 mph in a '56 Corvette in the flying mile.  This proved that the Corvette could compete with Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, and Mercedes-Benz.  With increased sales in '56, the Corvette was saved and today it is America's favorite sports car.

10 years ago a vendor of Corvette parts began a 'National Drive Your Corvette to Work' day to coincide with the birth of the car.  Mid American Motorworks encouraged Corvette owners to do just that and now every year, the Friday closest to June 30, Corvette's official birthday, is chosen to observe Drive Your Corvette To Work Day.  This year the date is Friday June 25th, so don't be surprised to see more than the normal amount of these fiberglass cars on the roads in your town and across the country that day!
